More drama with gas bill

Saw my mom’s new gas bill and based on the current and previous meter readings, which show estimate and not actual reads, my mom has been overcharged. Current: 689 therms Previous: 539 therms Difference: 155 therms There is no way she used 155 therms from June 4th to Sept 4th as it’s summer. Reading on meter today: 480 therms. That’s way lower than the current estimate reading of 689 and the previous one of 539 too. Don’t want to pay for that but I was told I have to pay the current bill (total $525.13) as it was already issued. I was also asked to submit a photo of the meter with the 480 meter read and adjustments would be made. I bet there will still be issues come next bill. Readings should not be estimate especially since I was told the new meter can be read remotely, which means no one actually has to go inside the garage to get a reading. While on the phone with a rep, I asked why my mom still has Family Energy as her supplier and is being charged for that when I cancelled it September of 2024 and have proof of that. The rep couldn’t answer that and said they are still listed as the supplier on the account. She asked me if I want to remove them and I said yes. Supposedly she took them off and my mom should no longer be charged for them. As far as potentially getting a refund for the previous bills when they shouldn’t have been the supplier I’d have to call them directly to inquire about that. I have a feeling calling them will result in nothing.

I was told the estimates were manual estimates. As opposed to what? What kinda other estimates are there?

@lovebuglena You would think someone would have red flagged the therms. In the summer? If nothing else someone should have come out and checked for a leak somewhere.

@porwest If manual estimates means a person just entered a number they thought the customer used why would they go so high? Makes no sense to me.

I think I would be taking photos (with time stamps if possible) from now on. I sure hope you get to a point where the bill is not so huge. Sounds pretty weird to me. Is there any way someone else is using the gas on that meter? It seems so weird.

@lovebuglena ......Makes it easy for them. I hope you get to the end of all of this. It must be very frustrating.

Nope. No one else using the gas. The readings say they are estimates which tells me no one actually read the meter. That shouldn’t be the case as I was told the new meter will allow for remote readings, which I’m assuming means they don’t need to actually get into my mom’s garage to read it.

It’s very frustrating to say the least. I wonder how they are going to make adjustments based on my submitted photo. Based on the meter readings on the current bill she was not only overcharged this bill but previous one too. And maybe even two before that; but can’t know for sure as we didn’t take any photos of meter readings after those bills were issued.

What a mess Lena! So sorry about that. These companies need to be monitored but yet they are not. They are too powerful. I wonder if anyone else is having the same issue..guess so..maybe the attorney general site will let you put a complaint.

Don’t know if anyone else is having this issue but it doesn’t help us anyway. If I got a thing in the mail telling me that Family Energy is no longer the supplier, that should mean it is no longer the supplier. I hate having to deal with all this but no choice. The account is in my name even though it’s my mom’s house.

What a bunch of BS. I would be contacting the Better Business Bureau and filing a complaint.
