Last Doctor Appointment of the Month

Hello everyone, how are you doing? Yesterday I had my last doctor appointment of the month...with my regular doctor. I used to see him every 3-6 months until I got an endocrinologist (thanks sucky pancreas). Now, I only see this doctor once a year for a wellness exam. The doctor was pretty pleased with my last A1c (though it was up from when the OB checked it at 6.9). He didn't even mention my weight gain. Most I've ever weighed, even when I was pregnant with Eli I weighed less. But I only gained 5 pounds in the last year....so I guess that is progress. I had gained 10 in like a month between the two visits I had with him last year (he had me come back a 2nd time to make sure a med he prescribed was working). He did do some blood work - checking just different blood numbers and such. My hemoglobin, mcv, mch, and mchc were all low and rdw was high - all of those point to iron anemic/deficient. The doctor hasn't called or messaged concerned, but I am going to look into taking an iron supplement. I know I don't eat a lot of foods with iron. My total protein was a bit high (just barely out of range) and that most likely is due to dehydration. I hadn't drank anything that day yet, but I don't drink enough water in general. For those who follow my trying to conceive journey - I finally got my ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully it all looks good so I can try the ovulation meds. That's if she'll let me while my A1c is 6.9. The OB also said though my thyroid was in the normal range for someone not trying to conceive/pregnant...it is a bit high so she'll want me on a thyroid med to lower it some. Alternatively I could probably just take some iodine to lower it... Anyways - that is my update for all of that. What do you think? Is the iron supplement a good idea? I should also add back some more foods with iron and have less carbs I know...and I will work on that. Photo via pixabay.

It sounds like your doing very well. Good lucky on your trying to conceive journey. The iron supplement is good if you are low but you can also drink some grape juice(concord) or eat lentils, spinach and such. Here's article that might be of interest too:

grape juice for iron? The trouble is I am a picky eater and won't eat any of those foods. I don't even like grape juice lol I do take a prenatal, and a few extra supplements already that are on the list you shared.

@MommyOfEli2013 ........Yes, concord grape juice for iron. Prenatals are good. I wish you luck. Being a picky eater you may not get the foods you need.

@celticeagle I figured maybe potassium, maybe vitamin C but never iron. Oh I know I don't get the vitamins and such I need, but been a picky eater for over 30 years lol. That's never going to change. So, I may need more vitamins than a non picky eater.

I would double-check with your doctor on how much iron to take. You don't want to take too much. I'm glad you will be getting the ultrasound; and I look forward to the results.

Oh I won't check with the doctor, I got a smaller dose supplement today. If I am actually anemic and not just deficient then I am sure this dose will not be a problem. Ultrasound done, not sure what the results mean...need the doc to interpret them I guess. Will try to look up what it all means

An iron supplement doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but girl, drink that water. I know you don’t like it, so try some of those no sugar water enhancers like Mio.

I just prefer my zero sugar soda which I won't give up. I have a bunch of flavors for the water, still doesn't get me to drink it lol

Best of luck to you and I hope that it will all work out with the ovulation meds, Who knows perhaps a special Christmas present. One way or another you will need extra iron,

Or maybe even birthday gift (that's in like 6 weeks). Well I never took iron while carrying my son....but wit knowing it is low now it is a good idea.

well that would be the best news...except of course when I found out I was having my son. But I hope I am not too late on trying to have more kids.
