One of my favorite treats is ice cream. Although it's hard to decern where it originated treats made from snow have been very popular for thousands of years. Here are a few facts:
* There are biblical passages that refer to King Solomon enjoying "a snow-colored drink at harvest time".
* In China dairy desserts were first developed during the Tang dynasty ( 618CE to 907CE). In spring Chinese nobility enjoyed "milk ice".
* It is also described in ancient records of a process of fermenting buffalo, cow or goat milk that was thickened with flour and flavored with camphor oil and then placed in metal tubes and frozen in an ice bath.
* There were 1.3 billion gallons of ice cream produced in 2023.
* Americans consume on the average around 5 gallons (about 25 pounds) of ice cream each year.
* It is called gelato in Italy, Kulfi in India, dondurna in Turkey, and sorbetes in the Phillipines.
