Song to Dance To: I’ll Supply the Love

It’s time to head to Lexington! Another hot date with my niece! But first, you’re going to get up and dance, courtesy of this song. These guys were used last month, and they’re back to show you their other side. I’ll Supply the Love - Toto Hey, it’s Toto’s first hit! Dang, that was a long time ago. I met them when they were on tour with their first album, opening for — no lie — Rush. (Yes, that Rush.) This is a rocking number, and one of those songs that makes you think that Toto is two or three different bands. They had three different lead singers: keyboardist David Paich (who wrote this, but didn’t sing it; however, he did sing the verses of “Africa”), guitarist Steve Lukather (best known for singing the softer parts of “Rosanna”), and Bobby Kimbell, who’s doing the lead vocal chores here. Kimbell, back then, looked like he had a Burton Cummings (the former lead singer of the Guess Who, who had the big hit with “Stand Tall”) look going on. Toto started as session musicians, most notably working together on Boz Scaggs’ Grammy-winning Silk Degrees album. On their fourth album (Toto IV, go figure ), they moved into the superstar realm with big hits and multiple Grammy awards. And, although I mentioned this last time, good trivia deserves to be repeated: David Paich is part of the only father/son combination in history to win an Emmy, when he and dad Marty Paich won for the Ironside music in 1974.
