One mother's story - looking for her son

I wrote a bit about Jane Adams in my last post. By the time her husband died in 1895, Jane had had twelve children. The oldest drowned in a well at 2 ½ years old, the next died at birth, a son died aged 13 from a riding accident, a daughter died at 20, and the third son, Charles, was killed in action during World War I. Young Charles would have been 13 when his father died and the oldest of the surviving children. He and his mother ran the property and took on a mail run until Charles enlisted in 1915. The photo shows a letter his mother wrote to the authorities trying to locate her son. It also shows his medals which would have been forwarded to her later. I can’t imagine they would have been much consolation.

She had so much heartache. I can't imagine what she and others similar went through losing several children and living difficult.

@JudyEv From what I have read about those in history, they did pick up the pieces and move on even in heartache. Many times having no choice. It's so sad.

I suppose she just had to get on with it as best she could. She and Charles the son ran the farm and the mail run, etc. She would have really missed his help when he enlisted.

It was but she achieved so much. She was inducted into the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia's "Agricultural Hall of Fame" in 2003 and was guest of honour at the opening of the Barbalin Water Scheme. We saw her grave at Nungarin.

@JudyEv I'm glad she survived long enough to see how she was appreciated.

@Fleura She was able to achieve her wish of daying on the farm so that was nice too.

Poor woman, no, those medals surely did not bring much consolation, she was already proud of her son.

She had a lot of loss. I hope they were able to tell her where.

She was probably happy in her own way. Sad to lose so many children but that was probably common enough in those times too. Not that it would make it any easier.

I think in those days people expected to lose a child or two but that doesn't make it any easier to bear.
