So I have wittered on for several months now about my amazing tomato plants. They were originally given to me free by a neighbour. Three cherry tomato plants …..well, I was given four but I gave one to my next door neighbour . Anyway, we have had thousands of tomatoes off these three plants….and I’m not exaggerating! We have eaten as many as we could and given lots away but there were just too many for us to use. I have dehydrated many many pounds too…..they will keep use going for several months. The season is now coming to an end and we picked the last of the ripe tomatoes yesterday. There are still so many tomatoes still on the plants and I don’t want to throw them away, so I am going to make green tomato chutney. I bought the ingredients I needed yesterday and during the week I will make the chutney. It will be great on a ploughman’s lunch or with crusty bread and a wedge of cheese. Have you ever made chutney ? Is chutney something you eat ?

I’m not quite sure what chutney is even though I’ve heard loads of people talk about it. I love tomatoes.

Chutney is not easy to explain. Small chopped fruits / veggies cooked in a spiced sauce. Left to go cold. Eaten with hot or gold meats, cheeses, etc. Mango chutney is often eaten with curries. Chutney is nice with cold meats or cheese on a sandwich. The one I’m making is, green tomatoes, chopped apple, sultanas, onions, brown sugar and spiced pickling vinegar. All in a pan and cooked. Left to go cold then placed in jars. Lasts quite a long time.

I think chutney is what we call salsa. I've never made it but we do buy it. I like eating it as a dip with corn chips, spread over a burrito and Pretty uses it in some of her cooking.

@Traceyjayne I don't see why not. Green tomatoes should dehydrate just like red tomatoes. Mom always sliced green tomatoes, dredged them in spiced flour and fried them but I didn't like those. You can always rehydrate tomatoes by putting them in water and soaking them for an hour or two.

Never made it, but have eaten it. I had the opposite issue with my tomato plants. I have gotten thus far two all year. There are a few on the vine now, now that the growing season is over. I hope they will be big enough to bring in at some point and can finish growing in here. They are only pimple sized now.

@Traceyjayne I would have loved that. Most plants don't seem to do well here. I think the soil is not good. And of course, there is always something trying to eat them.

@snowy22315 we plant ours in pots with compost so they aren’t actually in the soil. When my Dad grew them he kept them in the greenhouse ….ours were just outside . Fortunately all the hungry critters stayed away from them. Try again next year ….

Oh dear ….that must be disappointing. I wonder why there were so few ! I’m not sure what type mine are as they were gifted to me, but I have NEVER seen so many on a single plant …. I wish now that I had weighed them as I picked them.

I've only ever made chutney once. I have a couple of tomatoes on my little plant but I'm sure it won't bear nearly as well as yours.
