I have turned vegan. Not even curds. I have seen fear in the eyes of chicken when they are waiting to be slaughtered. I love dogs...stray or not. I love cats...cows...donkeys...monkeys....the bovine species....goats...etc. I am sure rats fear us. Very much. I would rather they be neutered...and they stink. And they bring diseases...and basically they bring in snakes....and if all rats were to die, snakes would step in to eat chicken.....eggs...and risk to us would be more.... All logical, all sane ....killing all snakes is mission impossible.... So....my question is....would I be wrong to get rid of an occasional mouse....using glue pads... I feel farm animals are cultivated with an object to use them. We shower love on them. We take care of them, develop a bond, and then betray that bond. So I for one am not comfortable....killing them, or eating them...whatever... Same pain I would not feel for a reptile like gator because gator can kill me. Right? So there it is the question of survival of the fittest. Bond does not form. But cows will not kill me...bonds with me...chicken rather chicks eat from my palm...they trust me...so betrayal of trust is not easy for me. To me all these are to a great extent defenseless lot unlike gators. While Mice are defenseless too...my standards change. I have no issues with others eating non veg. Their life, their thinking. My life, my thinking. But ...People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ...expecting me to be kind to mice....or rats......I differ because no bonding is possible. !!! What would you say...is it ok to use glue pads for mice? I am capable of murdering mice, snakes, centipedes, spiders, scorpions, rats, gators, etc. All those animals that can kill me or are of little use to me. Not very saintly, am I?

On our farm we never killed animals that we had made pets of but we killed sheep and chickens to eat. It's a complex situation and I understand that people becoome vegetarian or vegan because of their feelings towards animals. I think glue pads are cruel.

Would you kill a rat/mouse.....that entered your home? If so, how? And why do you think glue pads are cruel.

@vandana7 I would probably try to trap it. The traps we have kill them so they're not sitting there suffering. I think they die slowly and painfully on glue pads if they're not disposed of in good time.

@vandana7 It does my head in to think about sinning in this context.

The sane logic doesn't work everywhere for everyone..So, some where we all turn hypocrites. . I don't like the sight of rats, they are filthy. I will kill them if they enter my house the same way I will do it for any other pests. I am vegetarian by choice because of health reasons. I eat fish sometimes and I cook chicken weekly for my family. Not influenced by animal welfare and animal cruelty etc. It's personal choice and one logic doesn't work for everyone. Dogs are cute. But they can kill..we keep getting news of them attacking people and killing them.

I am not sure dogs that are domesticated kill. Some of the people are looking at giving away their pets...the cute little things....I find it difficult to decide which one to take because I want them all. I do feed chicken to my stray dogs twice or thrice in a week. I reckon they do not get right meal, unlike the pets. Pedigree etc., are balanced but for a day. Chicken liver can help to hold them through for two to three days. Proteins and other vitamins. I also cook for my father, every week. But eating it? Nope. Milk I stopped because of lactose intolerance. But I used to eat curds and ice creams even though it would give me tummy issues. LOL Now ice creams are stopped too. Imagine!!! Been listening to Acharya Prashant, and watching how they beat up young calves for drinking their mother's milk. Just horrible...the other day I tried to feed a cow which was new to the locality. She was so upset at being separated from her calf. She ate just one banana. Hungry but sad. I won't judge others because their life. Their thinking. They grew up like that. They cannot suddenly shift their views. But I will not contribute to that demand for meat or milk. That is my small contribution. For dogs, god made them like that. Stray ones. Their digestive system is like that. For me, will not take it for taste for sure...ice cream would be for taste.

@arunima25 The farther we have moved from our traditional ways, the more misery we seem to have created for these poor helpless creatures...the most touching scene the other day was...I brought this green vegetable (palak) for a cow that was sitting at the entrance of our gate. Simultaneously I bought bananas for me...the cow ....I often fed her, she is a familiar face unlike the other cow.....got up took away the bananas...LOL. Wouldn't let me peel it for her...or remove the plastic bag...oh dear...how hungry she must have been. Then came our watchman...he let her eat the bananas, and even green, and then used a stick to shoo her away....because she would poop and he would have to clean. LOL.

@vandana7 I feel bad for cows too. I remember having cows in our household. They were worshipped. Only after the calves were satisfied, they were milked for us. They were important family members. We would give first few chapatis to cows and the last ones for our other pets and even the stray cats and dogs. All that has slowly disappeared with urbanization and digitalization, making life so self centred. I just take curd in the afternoon, else no milk in my diet other than occasional paneer dishes. Our morals, ethics, logic etc keep changing with scenarios like our socio economic conditions and the options and trends we have. At the end, survival of the fittest wins. Sad but true! Everything else is compromised and accommodated along that line.

I think their problem with those traps are they don't kill fast.

Does fast killing make it less of a sin?

I don't like the idea of glue pads for mice; and have stopped using them. I have traps now.

Traps are not that effective. And frankly some of the traps that we get may actually be causing injury.

You are vegan, right? do you drink milk? by the way - cows don't produce milk for humans, it's humans who deprive the calves from its mother's milk , don't understand how is this not cruelty

I don't drink milk. Could not because of lactose intolerance. I agree, calves need to be given their share. What more, if there is a male calf, it is sold within a few months for beef. Separating cows from their children is enough of sin, added to that killing the Nandi is ...words fail me.
