Do Some Body Parts Only Exist to Hurt us?

It sure seems so in some instances. The Human body has about 600 bones, around 200 bones and many organs, tendons and fascia (human glue). Many are obsolete and a few body parts have even started to disappear and are only present in certain segments of the population. Those who have experienced wisdom teeth extractions or appendectomies might agree that it is as if some body parts only exist to hurt us. There are seven body parts that seem to only be a long for the ride. Here are a few: Appendix - This is a small pouch attached to large intestine and protect the body from infection and are a reservoir for bacteria. Thousands of people have these removed every year and do fine without them. The Tailbone(Coccyx) - This is the last remaining part from our ancestors. There are three to five vertebrae that aren't connected to the spine. Human embryos form with an actual tail that later disappears. In some cases, it can cause a person pain and is then surgically removed. Wisdom Teeth - This third set of molars start immerging between ages 17 and 21. Many people don't have them while others have no room in the jaw, and they become a problem. They can cause a lot of trouble for something that isn't even needed. Other human body parts such as the spleen, male nipples, some muscles used for goosebumps, and the palmaris longis muscle that reside at the wrist and forearm have been debated by research scientists as to their real purpose. What interesting subject matter to wonder over, huh?

My appendix ruptured when I was a kid and doctors removed it. There is some evidence now that the appendix may play a role in gut health and hold a reserve of "good gut bacteria" in case a person gets sick and the gut biome was wiped out by the illness. I also had all four wisdom teeth removed at age 16 because they were growing in sideways and crowding my other teeth towards the front of my mouth.

I read that about the appendix too. I try to streamline my posts so they aren't so long, so I left that out. I had my wisdom teeth removed early too. I think one of mine wanted to come in sideways too.

@celticeagle I'd rather not have any more surgeries. I hope you stay as healthy as you can in your older age, too.

You would think we would evolve and not have them when we are born.

I read now that the coccyx is not a tailbone. I don't know what the explanation was. I don't remember.
