I’m in Donegal.

I got to speak Irish today when I went into a cafe in Donegal. “Ba mhaith liom caife le do hoil” I told the girl at the counter. Since coffee was then produced I guess she understood me and didn’t think I was proposing marriage. It’s good to be here. The rain has been mighty all day so we stayed in this evening, sitting in deep sofas in gfront of the wood stove with wine and books. The house sits 100 metres above the village of Dún Fionnachaidh on a hill looking out to sea. A really comfortable house and the only problem was the terrible directions to get here. They made sense only after we found the place by accident. If the rain slackens off a bit we hope to trample through the forest and gardens at Gleann Bheatha and lunch at Fara Og’s.

Being able to speak the local language gives us satisfaction and brings us closer.

That sounds wonderful and I'm glad there are still mainstream Irish speakers. Irish directions though, are in a league of their own. I remember arriving at a crossroads where three of the four signposts pointed to the same place name. Presumably you could get there (eventually) by taking any of the three roads, but there was no clue as to which might be the best choice.

@fleura There are places where the miles yet to travel to one’s destination increase as you follow the road then suddenly one arrives

Did the girl understand what you asked? Irish sounds a very difficult language to pronounce.
