Stockpiling for November ‘25 - I just bought 1 month’s worth of groceries. Total: ……..? Guess

From what I’ve seen on YouTube, and TikTok (which YouTube also covers) and thru my job, things might get a little wild in grocery stores beginning Nov. 1 because of the gov shutdown and no SNAP benefits. It could get really bad, or maybe nothing will happen at all. But there are some people, usually the ones that get the bigger amounts like close to $1000/m that are actually admitting they plan on stealing. Not all, just some. Shoplifting can move onto stealing, which can move onto looting, and shelves will be empty. Or they’ll just be forced to close the stores. What I really didn’t like though, was there’s another plan about to go into action, maybe, a different kind of stealing. Not directly from the stores, but instead they plan on sitting in their cars and waiting to see who has a cart full of groceries, and then just steal the bags from people walking to their cars. Now this doesn’t make me “fear for my life” or anything … I just don’t want anyone stealing my groceries. So I went to Meijer today, I’d say I spent 3 hours in there stockpiling, carefully calculating items in my head, putting some stuff back, because I gave myself a very strict budget. 1 month of food for under $200. That’s $50 a week, very reasonable. This is one of the few times in my life I’ve ever bought in bulk. Usually I go shopping 2-3 times a week. Sunday night is always Kroger, Tuesday during the day is Meijer, and Fri. night is Meijer again, unless I’m out of the Walmart coffee and then I make it a Walmart night instead. But as of right now, I have absolutely no reason to do any kind of grocery shopping for the next month. November is covered. AND I stayed under budget! Even including Timmy’s cat food. And all the bottled waters because you know we have the lovely well water here. I really, really stayed under budget and I’m almost sorry I put a few things back. Oh well, I did it. (See pic!) And I won’t even have to deal with what may or may not happen in stores beginning Nov. 1st Do you plan on stocking up before November? And Happy Halloween everyone

I don’t know anyone who gets $1,000 of food stamps. That’s practically unheard of unless you have ten kids. And boy, the social media world knows how to overreact.

I don't know anyone who gets a lot of money like that on a food card. Before the son got sick, I volunteered sometimes at one of our food pantries. People never got amounts like that. Like Amber said, maybe you need ten kids to get that amount.

I have a friend I know from high school, she lives in Detroit and gets around $950ish SNAP per month. She’s a stay at home mom and has 2 kids, but household totaling 6 because of her boyfriend and siblings. She is VERY upset. I offered her a big bag of these “meal cookies” I make. They’re loaded with healthy ingredients and really do make you feel full like a meal. She just said Nah I don’t want that sh*t. I want my food, and I’m gonna get it. I hope she doesn’t do anything stupid. Thanks Amber

@MarieCoyle Not here in Michigan, lots of big households and I know a couple of gals getting close to $1000, split throughout the family though. And one even gets OVER $1000 because she has 2 kids, a husband who is unemployed, and is caring for a sick relative in the house, along with the relative’s spouse. I don’t really care how much people are getting, I’m glad they get it as long as they use it wisely. What I do care about is innocent shoppers just walking to their cars and getting their grocery bags stolen. If a person or family truly relies on SNAP and it’s their only source of food or access to food, and then it gets taken away, that’s when the survival instinct kicks in. That’s when some crazy stuff can happen. Praying for the whole situation. Thanks Marie Stay safe

I like how they say they will steal. Like, isn't that what they were always doing?

Hey Jim. How so? I mean if people were breaking into government/DHS buildings and stealing pre-loaded EBT cards, then yes, I would consider that stealing. But receiving government benefits is not stealing IMO. When something is handed to you, it is a gift and a privilege, not theft. Hope you had a Happy Halloween. First year in a long time I didn’t dress up. ..In the middle of moving and stuff but next year, watch out! I’m gonna be a cave girl.

@porwest I do see where you’re coming from. If you are truly disabled, even mentally, if you are elderly, if for any reason you simply cannot work regular hours to support yourself and your family, then yes, gov assistance makes perfect sense. But having endless amounts of children for the soul purpose of getting a lifetime supply of free food and housing.. no. I don’t like it, and it’s not fair. If you are healthy enough to keep having children, then you are not disabled. The benefits do not apply here. Also, the people receiving large amounts per month bragging about buying steak and lobster, for Heaven’s sake, stock up on shelf stable items, stockpile just in case, for times like these. When there are no benefits available or even delayed. This is why my job has labeled me a “Moderate” because they said my beliefs sorta swing both ways. But that’s only because I try to see things from all angles, I guess. Did you have a nice Halloween? I binge-watched Halloween 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, all the way to 7000.

Thanks @Ithink. You have no idea the calculations going on in my head at that store. But it was worth it. Hey, I remember you from a longggg time ago. Great to have you back! You seem to be somewhat of a prepper as well and that’s a smart way to live. Because looky here. The madness has begun.

That was really smart planning—staying under budget and preparing ahead shows great foresight. ?? I’m not personally stocking up, but it sounds like you’re set for November. Happy Halloween to you too — and give Timmy some extra treats! ??
