The parking lot here is getting interesting

We've had assigned parking spaces for as long as I've lived in this apartment complex. The numbering system was bizarre as they weren't numbered sequentially but each apartment has 1 assigned space. There also are unassigned spots for other people who live here and for guests. People are bizarrely protective of their spaces and flip out if someone is in their spot. I don't get annoyed about it because the guest spots are very close so I just park there.
The complex hired a company to come through and paint over the asphalt and re-paint the lines a couple of weeks ago. What I find strange is that they didn't put the numbers back in the spaces. My downstairs neighbor called the management office because the same pickup truck kept parking in her space (despite the fact that she doesn't use it and takes the handicapped one). She was told "well there are no numbers".
I don't know if they are just not going to repaint them or if there is some reason for the delay. That I've noticed now is that residents are shuffling and parking in different spots. I haven't heard of anyone fighting over it (yet) but I figure it is just a matter of time. Like I said people are very possessive of their spaces.

I can't see a really good outcome to this. Probably numbers and allocated spots aren't a bad idea.
