Oh, boy, here we go again! Another commercial-turned-hit song! Those fun 60s, I’m telling you! This has a lot of things in common with the 60s, and I’ll explain as we rock on out with today’s instrumental. No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In) - The T-Bones Another thing that happened a number of times in the 60s was that songs became hits by bands that didn’t really exist. There were the Archies and the Ohio Express as examples. The T-Bones also didn’t really exist. This was simply a man (Dave Pell) with an idea to take an Alka-Seltzer commercial and make it into a single. The actual band on the record is the famous L.A. group of session players known as the Wrecking Crew (including bassist Carol Kaye, who was supposed to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yesterday but refused the honor because the rest of the Wrecking Crew wasn’t inducted with her). Of course, the song got popular (it peaked at #3 in America and #1 in Canada), so they had to have a “band” to go pantomime it on American Bandstand. Now here’s where things get interesting: three of the members of the outside-the-studio T-Bones formed a group in the 70s and became popular once again. The three members were Dan Hamilton (who was in the T-Bones with his brother), Joe Frank Carollo, and Tommy Reynolds. You probably know the group if you recognize those names: Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds, of “Don’t Pull Your Love” fame. This wasn’t as popular as the “plop-plop, fizz-fizz” Alka-Seltzer commercial, but then again, that was never turned into a major instrumental hit. No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In) Written by Granville Sascha Burland and Lew Bedell Recorded by The T-Bones From No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In), 1965 Hey, this one sort of has lyrics….ahhhh, ahhhhhhhh
