Just No on These Peas, Please

I am always looking for the "best price" whenever I buy something, and so every thing has its place, so to speak. Take canned carrots. I usually get them at Dollar Tree, Founder's Street brand, for 75 cents a can, and they're just fine. Recently, I decided to switch back to canned peas simply because I find sometimes I don't always like the added crunchiness or sometimes "rubbery" nature of frozen ones, and figured, for 75 cents a can I'd try the ones at Dollar Tree. Nope. I am not sure what the idea is here. But these were some of the worst canned peas I have ever had in my life. They were downright nasty. They had a texture that was powdery and chewy, a bit like lima beans. Even the taste was off. They just weren't good. I'm not getting these again.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. I rarely buy veggies in the can..too much unnecessary sodium

I am the same. But there are certain canned ones I like better than fresh or frozen. Carrots, green beans, and now peas. When it comes to other veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, corn and other things I prefer fresh or frozen.

@porwest Once in awhile I will get a can of veggies just to save hassle.

I think when it comes to off-brands, it can be hit or miss on quality. For the most part, no-name brands generally taste as good as, or close to, the name brands, but every now and then you find something that just isn't right. Looks like you found it. haha

@porwest Eh, it happens. That's always the chance we take with no-name brands. 99% of the time it will be alright, but then there's that 1% where we just hope we don't die of food poisoning! lol

Yeah. I mean, 99% of the time I can't tell any difference. This was NOT one of those times. lol

@moffittjc And unfortunately, dying is permanent, so, there's no going back and avoiding doing that one again. lol

I like frozen for casseroles, stir fries and certain cold salads like tuna salad with noodles. Otherwise, I prefer the texture of canned for sides.

I save 100% by not eating peas. Seriously, I’m allergic to them, as in ruin-your-lunch allergic. Never liked them taste wise, either, which may be my taste buds keeping me from eating them.

@porwest — it’s like shrimp…got horribly sick on it (which turned out to be an allergy), and that was enough to swear me off of it forever. Same with peas.

@FourWalls That would keep me away from it as well.

I discovered, through this post, a lot more people dislike peas than I thought. Interesting to me, actually. lol

We buy some veggies in the can but never peas (We don't eat them.) and never carrots. We buy fresh carrots and I cut them up or shred them, whichever we need/want in the food we're making. Once in a while the Best Choice canned green beans at Price Cutter are woody and we throw those away.

@porwest Oh, I see... I eat a lot of carrots fresh but also steam them. We also use a lot of them in stews or soups.

@DaddyEvil Fresh 100% of the time in soups or stews. They always get good and tender. I just can't figure out why I can't accomplish that with them any other way. lol

I love carrots. The problem I always run into with it as a side is if I cut them and boil them or steam them, they just never get to my desired tenderness. So, I buy canned.
