Wasn't it Obvious?

How is it that I can sit in Jamaica and see exactly what Trump's actions will provoke while those in America can not? Tariffs only impact the purchasers. Hence, it is the purchaser who pays the increase, not the country one desires to 'punish'. The response to tariffs has been a decrease in the purchase of American goods by those impacted. The world is basically seeking to buy ABA... Anywhere but America. This was obvious to me, so why didn't Americans realise this? The mindless murders of fisherman Trump imagines are smuggling drugs will lead to serious lawsuits. These will not simply cost money but make Americans seem extra stupid as to how they could conclude a ship has drugs without any proof whatsoever? America will not recover from the damage Trump has inflicted. Many nations have turned to other countries and are not likely to return to America save if there are super bargains. Many Americans have lost their businesses, others suffer the price increase. The American economy will decline, impacting America, not China, not Brasil. It is amazing we saw what would happen, America didn't and won't.

I think that you sell some of us short. I can see what this jerk is doing. I have seen him for what he is since the mid 90s. He's an arrogant twit. Believe me it goes downhill every day. I suppose some Americans still believe but I can't see how. That is what is so perturbing for me. I tried and tried to make people see on social media about his lies and that things could get scary. That he wasn't out to help America at all. But, with Russia's help he got voted into office. The huge protests have shown that there are some of us Americans that see him for who he is. I just wish the people in Congress and in this administration would see it. A few are beginning to but not quickly enough for me. I can't believe there are still Americans who believe he is doing a great job and that fake news is so unfair. Boo! Wake up people.

I was reading how farmers, the vast majority who voted for him, are losing their farms, can't pay their bills, etc. I rem. when trying to find out who Epstein was because of the effect on, as he was then, Prince Andrew, and seeing Trump in almost every photo, video, etc. It is amazing.

@celticeagle exactly how I feel. He needs to be held accountable for his actions... I believe he has never been held accountable.

What you fail to understand is how tariffs protect the country that imposes them, which is what they are largely designed to do. If tariffs are enacted, it encourages competing nations who want to do business with one, say, the size of the United States, to conduct operations WITHIN the United States to avoid the tariffs being charged. Thus when they make their products IN the United States, they pay NO TARIFFS, no one is CHARGED the tariffs, and American workers make the products—thus offering jobs. American wages rise, and the products made in the United States boosts the country's gross domestic product values. This is a net GAIN economically. Not a net loss. In addition to that, tariffs also provide leverage to negotiate better trade deals, end wars and other things. You're just not paying attention. Before income taxes were imposed in the early 1900s the U.S.'s primary source of revenue was from tariffs, and it led to the United States being one of the strongest economically in the world and thrust the U.S. into an industrial revolution never seen before its time.

@jaylar I do not miss that point at all. I am willing to pay a premium to support American interests. That being said, Trump pulled those tariffs back.

@porwest everyone I know in the US says how prices went up... coffee esp. Point is this, if you want Levis, and have the money, you pay for the quality. You know that they last over ten years... speaking from personal knowledge, while a Chinese knock off which sells for far less might survive the year. (using Levis as an example of American made goods, from fridges to microwaves) Those who can't afford Levis buy the knockoffs... and there are many people in the US who can't afford them. What the tariffs do is raise prices for Americans. As we buy very little from the US now it doesn't effect us, and really doesn't hurt China as much as Trump imagines. Every 3rd world country has supermarkets, appliance stores, etc. jammed with Chinese products... you can't find US goods in most of them.

what you miss is that putting tariffs on coffee, which is NOT grown in the US (as well as other items not grown nor manufactured there) causes the purchaser, the American, to pay more. Sure if China manufactures this at a cheaper rate so it can sell it for $18 US contra this made in the US that sells for $80 yeah.. but that is not what is happening.
