An ardent Eagles supporter

Many Australians are mad keen on their sport and particularly on their Aussie Rules football. When the sport became a national game with teams from every state, except Tasmania, the first West Australian team was named the Eagles. I’ve spoken about the old homestead at Mangowine too and in the photo the two come together. Elva Hasluck was the daughter of Mangowine settlers (second-generation probably) and was obviously mad about the Eagles as her headstone describes her as ‘one-eyed’. What a lovely tribute to her.

A fitting tribute to Elva Hasluck. I prefer Aussie Rules football over American football since in the Aussie Rules football, there is more scoring of points and the players really play with passion.

That’s interesting! Of course to me, a sports team called the Eagles makes me think of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles.

@JudyEv I would so love it there WAS a team called the Butterflies! It’s a brilliant idea.

I guess it's a popular name for sports teams - like Lions, Bears. You never see a team called Butterflies, do you?

Not much familiar with this Sport and the famous personalities. However, I know that Aussies are fanatics about Sports and Games and well that means that carries on in most of the Sports. The Headstone above shows that the legacy of Elva is much acknowledged in the Aussie Rule Football domain.

Some people just about live and breathe nothing else but football. I guess Elva was one of them.

@JudyEv - My father and my brother liked European football, but they just watched the matches on TV.

I think Elva would be very pleassed with her headstone. we are friends who are real supporters and always attend the matches whenever they can. They have the scarves, beanies and jackets in the team colours.
