How embarrassing!

On Saturday morning I was expecting a few people to come round to play some music together, for our ‘really very slow’ session. I made the mistake of going back to bed with my coffee and sitting there reading just a little bit too long. Then I had a quick shower, and popped downstairs to fetch something, still in my dressing gown with wet hair. To my dismay I saw that one person had arrived 20 minutes early and was waiting outside the door! Luckily we have a little overhang so that the front door is under cover, since it was raining, and there’s a chair there… anyway I went to grab the key to let her in but the one that normally hangs on the wall wasn’t there, so I looked for my bunch of keys but couldn’t find those either! After running backwards and forwards for a few minutes thinking I was going mad I gave up, unlocked the back door, and went round to tell her to come inside that way, and make herself at home while I got dressed. Luckily she is already a friend and not one of the new people. Anyway I eventually found Big One’s set of keys and was able to open the front door for everyone else, looking more presentable by this time. And I later found that Little One had taken the ‘spare’ door key on Thursday (because we were not sure whether my partner would get home before I had to go out) then put it down nearby with some other stuff on top. And when she couldn’t find it on Saturday morning and needed to go out she had just taken my bunch of keys without saying anything She explained she hadn't come to tell me because I was still asleep; this was in spite of the fact I had already been in to see her twice to make sure she was up and not late for her volunteering that morning! At least I wasn't losing the plot and forgetting where I had put things. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

Little One sounds about like me. I always put things back in the vicinity of where they should be.

I would have been embarrassed, too. Luckily, we can open doors from inside the house without resorting to keys. (Can you imagine the horror if the door is locked and you can't get out if a fire broke out? ) Aren't kids wonderful at times?

I can imagine you were a bit of a state. When something like this happens, it can really throw you.
