Some Animals Barely Sleep at All

I was surprised to learn how drastically different the amount of sleep some animals require as opposed to that of the 8 hours humans need. The amount is less due to external issues such as the threat of predators while with others it is more to do with their biological make up. Here's a list of a few: * Chimpanzees sleep 9.5 hours a day. * Koalas sleep as many as 22 hours a day. * Elephant Seals sleep less than 2 hours and not for a straight period. Instead, they take naps of about 20 minutes off and on throughout the day. * African Elephants sleep for 4 hours a day usually between 2a. and 6a. They are also known to go up to 46 hours at a time without sleep probably due to predators. * Giraffes only sleep for about 30 minutes a day with some getting only 5 minutes in a 24-hour period. * Walruses are major sleepyheads. These fellows sleep for 2-19 hours but can swim for as long as 84 hours. * Fruit Flies sleep anywhere from 5-10 hours a day. The female fly may sleep for just 72 minutes a day. * Newborn Bottlenose Dolphins avoid sleep all together for the first month of life. * Cows simply dowse-- only manage about 45 minutes of REM sleep. I am glad I am human. *

Those are interesting facts. I did know that koalas spend a lot of time sleeping.

They seem to be rather famous for it.

@celticeagle They have a very slow digestive system so need ages of rest just to digest their food.

Isn’t it the dolphin that are able to sleep with one half of their brain at a time? I’ll make up for the time these animals don’t sleep.

I think so. Yes, make up for their time.

Very interesting. My body sleeps on the old time continuously, so when I get up having enough sleep at my usual 8 AM it is only 7 AM.

I understand. I go to sleep when I want to and I like to get up when I wish to too.

I'm like the African Elephant. I go 24-48 hours without sleep; and usually only get 2-4 hours of sleep at a time.
