Bought a Wrong Fish

Last Sunday I bought a wrong fish and I'm still silently cursing myself for the foolish act. I was born in the hill country of Bengal. In the tea estates of the hills fish was a rare luxury, though we had meat occasionally.Frankly, I didn't know names and shapes of any fish. But God gave me a life partner from South Bengal, where fish is a part of almost daily dish. When we have to buy fish I take her to the local market . She picks and chooses what she likes to cook and serve on the dining table. Last Sunday, she was planting flower saplings in our garden so I offered to go to the market to buy fish and vegetables. I felt confident that I would bring the fish we get regularly. But.. I had to go to a different fish seller than the regular one. I selected two live fish and got them weighed, 500 gram. I paid 80 Indian rupees. When the good wifey began to cut the fish she found two different kinds of fish in the the plastic bag, one rui , one mrigel! I was supposed to buy rui only. Mrigels are good but considered lower in quality and price. She gave me a pep talk on the looks of different fish. Anyway, she is good at cooking and the curry was good as usual . Next time, I should be more careful while buying fish.

If you don't know, then you just don't know. I'm sorry you made a mistake but at least she could still cook it.

At least you have learnt something from your trip to the market.

Actually, I go to the market almost every week sometimes even twice for vegetables. But I am an ignoramus about fish.

@franxav Me too. I got a bone caught in my neck when I was young and it's taken me a long time to like fish. I still only have it when we're out and I'm sure there are no bones in it.

Although it appeared to be a minor error, the meal was still enjoyable despite including two different types of fish. In the future, taking a moment to confirm with the seller can help ensure that the correct fish is selected, avoiding any mix-ups while preserving the quality and intended flavor of the dish.

She’s a well learned lady! But I’m sure she definitely knows how to make any fish taste amazing!

There is one more fish which has similarity with rui fish. It is the kaalbose fish. It is a bit darker but the major difference is in respect of the eye lens. For the rui fish it is black for the kaalbose fish it is reddish
