Hey, doesn’t that look repetitive! Absolutely, it is! We come to the song that gives the countdown its title this month. And there’s one thing for certain: if you don’t remember the Bee Gees’ song you definitely aren’t going to remember this chart “flop.” But at least you’ll like it a lot better.
Here’s the “Linda” side (and I think she’ll like this one).
Boogie Down - Al Jarreau
It is so hard to classify Al Jarreau. He was a smooth jazz/soul singer (see the theme to the TV series Moonlighting). He could also give up the funk (ow!), as he did in this song. Look at the Grammys he won: one for jazz and one for pop…in the same year.
That’s one of the things that makes Jarreau’s music so sustaining. Like the smooth jazz vocals? He had you covered. Wanna dance? He did that, too…such as in this great song.
It bombed (only reaching #77 on the Billboard chart), but that doesn’t disqualify it as a good song.
Boogie Down
Written by Al Jarreau and Michael Omartian
Recorded by Al Jarreau
From Jarreau, 1983

They can’t all be winners. I’m surprised you had such disdain for “Boogie Child.”
