Elves can take on many forms from J.R.R.Tolkein's Lord of the Rings to many role-playing games and fairy tales. They are human-sized, wise and willowy. Here are just a few facts about them:
* In folklore they are supernatural tricksters.
* This time of year, you cand find them as Santa's helpers.
* They were known as troublemakers in Norse and Germanic lore.
* In earlier times illness was often blamed on elves.
* They often used music and dancing as ways to ensnare and enchant humans.
* It was around the 1800s when elves became associated with Christmas from describing Santa as 'a good ole elf' in the beloved " ' Twas the Night Before Christmas" poem by Clement Clarke Moore to the never published "Christmas Elves" that Louisa May Alcott wrote in 1856.
* Though J.R.R. Tolkien used the word 'elven' when he wrote to his son in August 1953 Merriam-Webster has never recognized it as a word.
