What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?

What did you want to be when you grew up and is that what you became? I had bad parents. They didn't inspire me or support me or encourage me to have any vision for my future. I never really had any plans. I just knew I was supposed to work my whole life. Probably as a secretary. But I do remember when I was younger, maybe 8-10 I liked to play "teacher" and run a classroom and I always loved school and learning things. So I worked my whole life, mostly in managerial office or executive office jobs and liked it okay but when in my 30's I finally started college and my first graduate degree (MBA) and started teaching college, I finally felt that "fit" that I was disconnected from. I think I was always meant to be some sort of educator. I ended up doing it for 17 years as a second profession. Now tell us what you wanted to be when you grew up.

Actress. Not a "gosh I'd like to be famous" actress; but a serious one. I was pretty good. My mother only had aspirations for me to be a secretary; but I managed to get promoted to various supervisory or managerial positions. I even had my own business for 7 years. She never encouraged me to aspire to a greater goal.

In primary school, all the girls wanted to be film stars or air hostesses. They both seemed very glamorous at the time.

I had 3 things I was kind of focused on...being in the Peace Corps, which I eventually dismissed because I knew I wasn't cut out for it. My idea of helping people is from an air conditioned office, although I did applyy to ViSTA once. A foreign correspondent..seems like a cool job, or being a flight attendant aka stewardess. Probably few times in my adult life would I have met the weight requirements for that. I guess I did do the helping people from an air condtioned office though as a case manager.

I went through a whole host of possibilities growing up, but my parents just wanted me to strive to do the best at whatever I chose. I had a lot of professors push hard for me to go into psychology because I excelled at that. Unfortunately, I take other people’s problems as my own, and I knew I couldn’t do it for my own mental health. In the end, I was going to be a teacher.
