Alas Poor Grandma

No, not my grandma. I no longer have any grandmas. What I am referring to is a silly Christmas song that for some reason has really stuck in my mind. The song is “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer,” sung by Elmo and Patsy. It is a country pop song and was recorded in 1979.
The song tells the tale of poor Grandma, who drank too much eggnog and, not having taken her medication, still goes out in a snowstorm to head for home. On the way, Santa and his reindeer trample the poor woman. At the end of the song, the warning is that Santa, being a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves, is completely unfit to have a driver’s license.
Now all of this might be stuff and nonsense but the song is catchy and I think of it completely differently. In my version grandma might be tipsy but once she is outside she wonders if she is really seeing Santa and his reindeer. One of the reindeer say Rudolph knocks her down while passing by. Then grandpa finds her and takes her home where the next day grandma has one heck of a hangover. That would be my preferred version.
In my travels on the net I also discovered that the popular TV show Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 Episode 12 was titled “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.” However, you can bet that this holiday episode has nothing to do with a drunken grandma or with reindeer and Santa.
Anyway, have you heard this song before? Do you have a silly Christmas song that you like?

Nope. We used to sing traditional Christmas songs like Silent Night, Holy Night, Jingle Bells, among others.

I have always simply detested that song. It's just an insult to Christmas--and to grandmothers.

I know it's for fun, but I still don't like it. It just seems insulting to us grandmothers.
