On December 10th I was sitting at my desk watching a video on YouTube, like I do, and I suddenly hear the sound of an upset kitten. The sound of an upset cat, or kitten, is distinct from one of pain, just in case you didn't know that. I got up and went outside. Now, this is Texas, so while you guys up north might already seen some winter weather, I think we might've dipped below freezing once. It might've been that night. I went outside and called for the kitten. She ran toward me, then stopped. I suspect she might have been born to a feral mother. She kept doing that. She would come toward me, then run away. She was trying to hide behind stuff. I finally took the spring off the screen door, left the front door open and stepped away inside. Now, cats don't like to looked at, even less to be stared at, so I stood away from the door and would only glance towards it. She came in a few feet, then backed away, again. Finally she braved coming in further. Remember, I was standing there, about 3 long strides from the door, not looking at her except for short glances. Once she was further in and behind some stuff so she couldn't see me - because I couldn't see her - I took those strides and slammed the door. It freaked her out a bit, but now I could lock the door and turn out the front light. I put a little bowl of food and water in the front room and decided to go bring the dog in. Now, any time this dog has access to a kitten he has killed it. But I was tired of the cats not letting the dog sleep in his bed. Actually, I think it wouldn't have been a problem except about the only things he kind of guards is little growls when he thinks a cat is looking at his food. He will lay on the cold, hard floor rather than get into his bed with one cat at the other end. Dog came in and I took him to the hall with his food and his 'special' treat, with the pills in it. I really don't remember how I got her out of the front room, it must have been the next day. She was in the kitchen that night. Now, because I normally keep the cat food on a counter extension, I don't think she found it. She might've eaten some that had fallen, but on Friday she was hungry. One of my treat motivated cats had gotten into a area that I don't want him to say in. I grabbed the treats and lured him out. I also had a very aggressively hungry kitten who was going to brave the big scary human to get food. Realizing the kitten was attacking treats like she hadn't eaten in hours, I figured out how to catch her. I put some treats in the lid of the bottle and set it on the floor. Then I took off my shirt and when she went for the treats, I dropped it on her. She ran, but instead of escaping, she was tangled up in cloth. I then picked her up and got her into my room. She was young, no more than 5 weeks, I think, and if I was going to be able to 'flip' her from feral to friendly, I had to limit her exposure to other cats. I had been allowing Teeny and Boris to come in my room because the roommate, who she has bonded to hasn't been home since July 6th. Boris also bonded with her, but Teeny is afraid of the black girl, Onyx, and Boris isn't afraid of much. And Teeny was in the room when I released the kitten. OMG! Now Teeny was afraid of a kitten! While we got Teeny as a kitten, she was the last one until now. Both Frank and Braveheart were grown, or mostly grown on Braveheart's part. So, this little thing was scarier than Onyx. On the other hand, Boris had taken Teeny and he and she were in the room where the roommate was working. Boris had been a kitten too and he had been in the room when the roommate's employers sent everyone home, he was almost 2 when that happened. But he liked being in a room others weren't coming in. It really wasn't they weren't allowed, it was more they didn't go in the room a lot. So, despite being 5, almost 6, years older, he is still the only one to have ever dealt with a kitten. He doesn't have the energy he had at 2. Kittens are like toddlers, they play, the 'hunt' they just go, go, go until they just almost drop in place and sleep for a while. Grace has decided she loves soft things, which makes me think even more she was born feral. She is afraid of me when I stand up, but she's beginning to accept it. She was also afraid of me rolling around in the chair, she is also doing better about that. But she loves to be pet now and thinks I am probably not a bad bed. Especially if Boris is around. So, what do you think of my new member of the family? Have you acquired one? A new baby? grandbaby?

Aw, what a sweet little kitty. I’m highly allergic to cats so I can’t have any, but I still keep a lot of cat food for the neighborhood cats who wander into my yard.

I'm glad you've got somebody new around to take care of. I'm sure she'll figure out what's what in no time. My daughter would love to have a house full of cats but I'm extremely allergic to cats and dogs. Anything with fur, really. We can't have them. Once in a while Pretty will catch a neighbor's cat outside and love on it but, when she comes back inside, I need an epi-pen shot and she has to shower immediately.
