One day the sun will shine again here! Not today, though. With the new day comes a new person on the list of music losses from last year, and yet another one whose name you don’t know, but music you do. Rick Davies Rick Davies was the co-founder of Supertramp and one of the two principle songwriters and lead singers. He was the deeper-voiced one, although he did both the baritone AND falsetto on “Goodbye Stranger.” (Roger Hodgson was the primarily “high” voice singer on songs like “Dreamer” and “The Logical Song.”) There are acts in America primarily known for one song or one album. In the case of Supertramp, it’s their 1979 classic Breakfast in America. (It also brought actress Kate Murtagh [1920-2017] a wide audience for her photo as “Libby” the waitress on the cover!) They had other hits, but had primarily been an “FM rock” band until that album was released. And, of course, success brings friction, so in 1982 Hodgson left Supertramp, leaving Davies the sole original member for the rest of the band’s career. Those things happen, and it’s sad. I don’t think they’ll ever put Supertramp in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but those who enjoyed their music don’t need that to justify the songs we still sing along with after all these years. Goodbye, Rick, it’s been nice. Rick Davies Born Richard Davies, July 22, 1944, Swindon, Wiltshire Died September 6, 2025, East Hampton, New York (multiple myeloma) (age 81) Here’s Rick Davies singing the classic “Goodbye Stranger:”

Our new friends about 8 houses up the road come from Swindon. Now I see it popping up all the time.

I had NO IDEA someone from Supertramp did this song. I would have told you that I wasn't familiar with Rick Davies' music.

You were too busy digging The Bee Gees back then. And, in that time, songs were generally either The Bee Gees, written by The Bee Gees, or not associated with The Bee Gees.

Indeed. I wasn't a huge Supertramp fan, but the songs I did like, I really liked.

As do I. My dear mother of blessed memory loved their song “It’s Raining Again.”
