Polydactyly

January 23, 2026 11:19am CST
Polydactyly is a condition where humans are born with extra fingers or toes And there is more of it about than I thought. Despite being 65 years old, I have never met anyone who has this condition. Yet recently, I have come across many examples of photos with people with extra digits online. So I did a bit of research Polydactyly happens in between one on 500 - 1000 live births. I wonder why then all these years I have never noticed one single person with an extra finger or toe Last night I saw this photo of this pretty girl with 6 fingers on each hand

Are you sure it's not AI-generated if it's photos? You can't trust photos these days. There is a clip of a deer shoving its fawn through the open window of a car. As if that's likely to happen.

@Ineeddentures You can't trust anything nowadays. Vince found a good-looking girl with a wonderful voice but that's all AI too. He was very disappointed!

@JudyEv I bet he was. I could make my voice AI. I think you only need to sing a few notes in tune and AI can work out the rest

I saw one with a Lioness giving it's cub to a Monkey to look after Never even thought about AI

@Ineeddentures It's a dominate gene so if it isn't present in one of the parents it won't happen.

I must check what the live birth rate is for it in cats I imagine because cats give birth to more kittens at once than humans do babies The cats are more likely to be extra digited

@wolfgirl569 Ok, cats would never be checked for that, would they? Probably no reason to check for it

@Ronrybs I bet. Lol Would be quite funny to see as I always laughed at cats scratching people

I've had lots of dogs and cats in my life and never saw any with an extra digit . Did the extra toes alter the way the cat did things?

@Ineeddentures The Muslim community can be up to 50% cousin marriage here. Bradford hospital is a world center for congenital defects in Asian kids

@thedevilinme Really. Scotland has a history of cousin marriages as well to be honest I have interacted with a cousin and a 2nd cousin when I was younger. Both female before your mind wanders. The cousin, well met her in a night club, didn't know she was my dad's brother's daughter, and bobs your uncle we did the deed. I saw a picture on her living room wall in the morning. I recognised my uncle in the picture. I said nothing. Then about 10 years later we met at a family gathering, that was fun Then second cousin gig was no big deal, I don't think either of us was bothered about being related

I've seen this before but it was my male friend, only he had a problem with not being able to use his sixth finger.

I wondered if it could be a problem and you have answered the question.

Aye. If it was true of one on 1000 people there would be 8 people in our small town.

I hope it proves beneficial and not a handicap. Most probably it is just an additional appendage. The girl looks happy being one among many with this condition

She is very attractive I would be interested in being touched by someone with extra fingers to see if it felt different than being touched by someone with only 5 fingers on each hand

What is interesting to me is that it is a dominant genetic condition but you rarely see it. Very low gene frequency.
