My one experience with telehealth

I commented on Amber (@AmbiePam) post about using telehealth. I’ve only had one experience with telehealth. We were living about 15 minutes from town at the time and had been out to a Chinese meal. Occasionally there is something in Chinese dishes that I must have a reaction too. I come out in itchy welts but they don’t last all that long and I might take an antihistamine and that’s about it. But this time, when my lips started to tingle, I thought perhaps I’d get some advice. The person I spoke to was very helpful but apparently a nurse rather than a doctor. Once I explained my symptoms, she put me through to a doctor. We were living on our country block at the time but he said if the symptoms got any worse, I should go to the hospital. Luckily they didn’t and I was fine by morning. Vince slept through the whole thing! The photo is from Thailand showing the house we slept in when helping with installing a clean water supply for a Karen village.

I've had a few. I'm fine with them for basic stuff like I've just been puking all day and need a doctor's note. Just did one yesterday to refill my asthma meds. During COVID it was kind of nuts to do a cardiology appointment virtually. I had to take my own BP, pulse, etc. as well as show a picture of my lower legs. Not really sure how you do cardiology via telehealth.

I'm sure they can't possibly work for everything. It seemed a good idea in my situation as it was after midnight and we'd both had a drink or three. I wasn't really worried until my lips started tingling and seemed to be swelling a bit.

I love TeleHealth for routine visits. I wish they did them more for things like UTIs, etc.

I guess they have to be a bit careful about what advice they give over the phone.

@JudyEv Yes but when you get UTIs all the time, you shouldn't have to come in or go to urgent care.

He slept through it? Oh, Vince misses all the fun. That sounds kind of scary.

There didn't seem much point in waking him. Neither of us would have tested negative to DD although I hadn't had a lot.

Me too. I got a referral after that to go to someone to find out what I was reacting too but I never made the appointment.

I would start noting which dish I ordered each time

I should probably do that but it only happens very, very rarely.

Glad it all turned out okay! Sounds like telehealth worked really well, even if Vince didn’t get to join the excitement.

@JudyEv I wonder what caused that reaction. My brother is allergic to carabao meat—his face swells whenever he eats it. The tricky part is, he loves ordering beef dishes at carenderias (local eateries), but some of them use carabao meat instead, and he doesn’t even know it until his face swells!

I went back to bed and went back to sleep. When I woke up I was okay again.

My insurance company tries to do home health visits which is a waste of time if you ask me. I did one telehelth call during the pandemic. Guy insisted oon video, When I told him I couldn't. because we were out and about and I was trying to push him off until I could get home and to my computer. A year later, Apple introduced facetime for everyoone.

It can't possibly work in many situations but I guess sometimes it's okay.

@JudyEv It's good when you do need it or need to ask a question, but at the same time, it's not ideal. At the time, my husband was still working and we needed to run erronds around his schedule. I figured I'd be fine taking ear buds along, so I could do the shopping, but nope. I had to find a place to park, pull out my phone, and try to hold it enough away from my face so I could be seen though the camera.

So would you recommend telehealth or would you prefer the traditional method?

@JudyEv Me too I prefer to be inspected in person. But yes on wee hours it is quite handy and can at least provide reassurance.

I'd prefer to see someone but this was in the middle of the night and I didn't want to wake Vince or have to drive 20 minutes to the hospital.

“Thanks for nothing.” Wow, that’s woeful. I haven’t used telehealth much, but I’ve had no problems when I have.

It’s a cool looking house. I bet though that it gets hot in there.

Thankfully we are mainly back to 'normal' appointments now. During Covid times you would call the surgery and they would take your details and symptoms and a doctor would call back - but they would call when you were in the bathroom or eating dinner with family or some other time which was inconvenient and /or not private (or both). A useful system if you live alone and never have visitors I guess.

I hate having to hang around waiting for a phone call. I can never really settle to anything until the call is over and done with.

The house looks like a hut. Did it have all the facilities of a concrete house?

The kitchen was outside under the eaves and there was no toilet. It was very basic accommodation.

@aninditasen They would head out into the forest. I don't know if they had any receptacles in their houses.

They seem big houses for such primitive areas.
