How did your school handle snow days?

So our distract adds snow days into the calendar, but I have heard some public schools in states add days to the school calendar when they have snow days. I went to a private school (if you had seen our local public schools you’d know why my parents made the sacrifice), and we weren’t subject to the public school calendar. They’d put like two days in for a snow day, but if we had more than that we didn’t have to make them up. What was your school’s policy? Do you know your current district’s policy?

Back in the stone age when I went to school we didn't have snow days. We trudged to school in the snow and if it was too bad we just stayed home. We all bundled up and looked like Ralphy in the movie Christmas Story,

That was my dad’s way of life too! They trudged through the snow. Of course, in high school when they started going to a different school the buses couldn’t always make it. I think that’s when they started having snow days.

@AmbiePam things were so different back in those days. It's the old joke "we had to trudge to school in snow uphill both ways:"

We don’t have any built in. They just tack on extra days in June

Has there ever been a year where they didn’t have to tack on days?

They are allowed so many here and then have to do extra at the end of the year if they go over. But a couple of years ago they did class online instead of cancelling. I don't know if that's still an option

I’d have wanted virtual instead of tacking them on.

I don't think they had invented snow days when I went to school.

They hadn’t when my dad went to school. If you missed you missed, and if they canceled, they didn’t bother to make them up.

@AmbiePam As far as I remember everyone walked to school, and if there was snow we played in it at break times! I guess some people must have missed school when the roads were four feet deep in drifted snow and they had a mile to walk, I don't remember though.

@Fleura Yeah, my dad walked to school until high school, but with feet of snow they couldn’t always manage it.

I'm old , so back in the day they tacked on extra days at the end of the school year in June if you had to make up any snow days

I’m old, so it was either school or no school. The worst thing was having to wait until the next morning to see if there was going to be school, with the lists being alphabetical on TV and radio. (We have an Owen County and an Oldham County, so I always remember them spelling out Owen “O-W-E-N” on the radio when that county’s schools were closed.)
