Checking the news online today I found this heart wrenching story out of Houston: A disabled man was attacked by two men by two on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. He was panhandling as he usually did and had his emotion support dog with him the men knocked him down and drove off in old pickup truck with his dog. The man was identified as being Gene Fivel, 42 from the area who panhandles to cover lodging and basic needs. His dog, Bailey, is trained to wake Fivel if he quits breathing. The authorities searched for the dog but is still missing. Sheriff's deputies are checking surveillance video footage trying to identify the people and the older blue pickup truck. Fivel is devastated and says that in the past he has spent hours at the intersection of U.S. 290 and FM 1960 West and people have given him money and food. But on January 19th two men confronted him, took items and then left with his dog. He says his dog is real sweet and she helps him through his problems. His mother, Peggy Dobbs, says "It's like someone lost a child." This is a busy stretch of northwest Houston and authorities are checking cameras around the area. It's not known if the suspects knew Fivel or if they have been seen in the area before. Family members say that Bailey is neutered and has a microchip, authorities have not verified this information yet. There has been other robberies in the areas but no connection has been found. As of January 29th, there have been no court filings or updates on this. Detectives are canvasing the area. Men like these should be tied up by their thumbs. This was moms wishes for the bad guys back when I was a child and we were watching the popular westerns of the day.
