Does Your Town Still Have Drive-in Movie Theatres?

United States

Does anybody remember going to the drive-in movie theatre back in the day? You'd park your car on some gravel next to a pole with a speaker on it. You'd put the speaker inside your car and it was crackly and not great quality. You'd sit with the windows down and hot air all around you in the summertime and watch a movie on a giant screen. You'd have to get up out of your car to walk to the concession stand for popcorn or drinks or snacks. There's at least one drive-in movie theatre that I know of here locally in the next county over, about 15 miles from me. I haven't been since I was a teenager. I don't think I'd like it now.

Oh, I remember most of them. Kenwood was one of our favorites, followed by Preston. We went to South Park a few times. I haven’t been to see any movie in 40 years now, so it wouldn’t matter if we did have them. Although the “DIVE-IN” (movies shown at water parks) sounds fun.

I have never been to one. There used to be one in a bad part of Oklahoma City, but I don’t know if it is even still open anymore.

The one here is a new one. It has only been around since about 2016 maybe. We went once, but now their prices seem outrageous.

Yes, I remember doing that. And could still do that here if I wanted to. My city still has a drive-in movie theater but, one big change is that they tell you to tune your radio to a certain station and you hear the movie sound broadcast over your car stereo system. The sound is good and you can run your vehicle so you can have air conditioning now. (Loud vehicles are sent to the back row of the parking lot.) We haven't been there in years because I can't see the screen unless we get a spot on the front rows. *shrug*

Yes, I remember those days. No, there isn't a drive-in theater here and I don't know if there are in any of the towns close to me. Not that I know of.

I think there might be about 3 left in our state now. They were all the rage until TV took over.
