Island Beach State Park is a local state park and where my family has spent hundreds upon hundreds of summer days/nights. It is consistently rated as one of the best state parks in the country and one of the best beaches in the nation. It is also where my dad had his tragic ocean accident a couple of years ago. After the crazy winter weather that we've had lately there has been a lot of beach erosion there. A shipwreck from 1890 has been uncovered. The ship was the Lawrence N McKenzie and was carrying oranges from Puerto Rico on the way to New York City. The ship and cargo didn't make it but somehow the 8 members of the crew survived. The "shipwreck" doesn't look like much. It just looks like a pile of wood. Still IBSP has said that it is illegal to disturb it or take anything from it. The goal is to preserve it for the future but I don't understand the value of preserving it. I guess my mind is too limited. Its not like it is the Titanic. Anyway I saw this picture on the IBSP FB page a couple of days ago. What I found interesting is that the story is now on the UK's Daily Mail (US) site. The woman who is shown looking at the "wreck" is my friend Jen. She is the superintendent of the park. I texted her and said "you've gone international!"
The Lawrence N. McKenzie - a 98-foot cargo vessel built in 1883 - was lost to the sea on March 21, 1890.

How interesting i find things like that intriguing. Amazing that so many survived. I wonder if the oranges floated up on any beaches.

There is a reconstructed one in the Outer banks..where so many ships wrecked. It is the Laura Barnes.

That happens quite a bit a short distance from here, in Madison. They keep finding ancient dugout canoes in Lake Mendota that are thousands of years old.

You're right. It just looks like a pile of wood. I wonder how they identified it as a shipwreck.

Interesting. What's interesting too is going to Mel Fisher's Museum in Key West. We met Mel on one of our trips. After a storm, there have been treasures found out in the water from the many wrecks down there. Cool that your friend has gained celebrity status!
