Abraham Lincoln signed the legislation that created the United Secret Service on April 14, 1865, the very day of his assassination. The original reason for the formation of this agency was not to protect the president. It was to combat counterfeiting that was so widespread in the U.S. after the Civil War. It is estimated that one third of all U.S. currency that was in circulation at that time was counterfeit.
