We've had two women in recent years try for the presidency. But did you know there was an earlier one? Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for the presidency. She announced her presidential campaign in 1870 and was nominated the following year in the Equal Rights Party. In the 1872 election she ran against incumbent Republican President Ulysses S. Grant and Liberal Republican Horace Greeley, with Frederick Douglas as her running mate. This was a very controversial move at a time when women could not vote yet, serve on juries or hold many public offices. She was a newspaper publisher, and woman's rights advocate.

I think she had a lot of nerve for that time and all. Bravery.

I've never heard of her but what a brave, forward-thinking woman.
