Put the cat litter in the oven!

Do you ever say something and then think that whatever it was would sound really odd to someone who heard it out of context? That was my thought as I called out ‘Put the cat litter in the oven!’ to my partner as I dashed out of the house last evening. In fact, there was a far more mundane explanation for this than it sounds. In cold weather, condensation inside the car is a problem, and one suggestion from motoring organisations to help keep the windscreen clear is to keep some moisture-absorbing material in the car. Cat litter in an old sock on the dashboard is recommended. So I have been using that but it was losing its effectiveness and I realised it was past time to replace it with some fresh stuff. But then I thought that since it has only been absorbing moisture from the air and not anything nasty, perhaps we could dry it out and use it again? We decided we might as well try, so I thought I would put it in the oven but not at the same time as food (especially as we have a fan oven); we could just pop it in after we had finished cooking something, while the oven was still hot. So that was what I meant to do, but of course in a rush I forgot and only remembered as I was about to rush out of the door. Hence the shouted instructions! That does sound funny. Why not just warm the car up before you leave? The warmed air will keep the windows clear while you drive.

Yes but then as soon as you stop all the moisture in the air will condense out again as the car cools, plus the extra from you breathing while you were in there.

@Fleura But you warm the car up before driving it again so no moisture on the windows again.

@DaddyEvil Sure but it takes quite a lot of time to dry out, and the engine has to run for quite a while before the air actually gets hot, so we'd have to sit in the car with the engine running for a while before going anywhere, which is both a waste of time and a waste of fuel and a cause of unnecessary pollution. And when it's pouring down with rain outside opening the windows doesn't help, in fact it makes the situation worse. And we always seem to be in a rush anyway!

What kind of cat litter do you use? Does your cat mind? Who is the sock owner? Serious point now, I knew a guy on the frozen north who used to dry the cat litter out in a steel bucket on his fire on his living room to actually use the cat litter again for the cat to poop and piss on His house smelled disgusting

It's Fuller's earth. And we don't have a cat (so no chance of getting mixed up LOL). It's my old welly sock, quite a pretty one actually with roses But drying out the used (by the cat) cat litter is a step way too far

@fleura I used cat litter as grit on the church car park. Very chalky and it got walked into church and made an awful mess. I got told off.

That would be quite something to actually hear someone call out to a household member.
