My daughter and I had moved into a nicer place. It was a brownstone and each apartment had antique pieces in them. It was a nice place and we enjoyed living there. There was one guy who lived in the basement apartment. We kept running into each other. He kept pursuing me and I kept dogging him. I was enjoying being single and didn't want to start a new relationship with anyone.
I would describe DBY as a bohemian type. He rejected social norms, had a unique style of dress, and was into music and art. He was extremely sensitive.
It was the summer of 1987 that he and I started a relationship. My daughter liked him and they grew to have a good relationship. He had a good heart and was fun to be around at first. We moved in together and started a life together. He was sensitive and misinterpreted things at times. He and I traveled. He liked to take drives in the mountains, and we did a lot of that. We went to the coast and enjoyed good times together. He had a great sense of humor and was a very intense debater. He would read to me from some books by Patrick McManus about fishing and outdoors stories. They were fun and very enjoyable. Sunday mornings we'd have tea and toast or something and he would read.
He had four old friends who enjoyed getting together for music. So one night a week they come over and we would drink and they would play music. Sometimes he would over drink and things began to get testy when he did. One night I had struck up a conversation with one of his friends. This was unusual because I am shy and I didn't really like this friend. He had a reputation as a lady's man and had had several affairs. DBY had also told me things he had done in the past and so I knew how he was. But he had found my knowledge of old movies fascinating and we got to talking. Later when they had left, I saw a look on DBY's face that told me things were not good. That look became something I would see a lot of and I always knew that it meant trouble.
We argued for a long time. I tried to make him understand that I didn't care anything about this guy and we had just had that one subject in common. Finally, I realized he was not going to stop, and I told him I needed to go to bed. I had work the next day at 8a. So I went in the bedroom, got ready for bed and turned the light out. A few minutes later I hear the door opened, the light is switched on and DBY jumps up on the bed and is jumping up and down with saliva dripping out of his mouth.
I will end this part here. I hope you will go read 'Part Two' and see what happened next.

Sometimes I wonder what made him act the way he did.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry! Jealousy is no joke, it often comes with such fits of anger.

It's rather sad because he was such a nice guy until he started drinking so much.

I"m glad my marriage was relatively drama free.
