Have you tried Hagelslag?

My partner’s work colleague just returned from a trip to the Netherlands and he brought some of these for everyone. We had never heard of them before but apparently they are a big thing there; practically everyone loves them on buttered toast for breakfast or as sandwiches for a quick lunch, which all seems a bit weird to the rest of us! Hagelslag translates as hailstorm and they are basically big chocolate sprinkles. According to this article in the BBC, an estimated 750,000 hagelslag sandwiches are consumed every day. Have you tried this Netherlands delicacy? https://www.bbc.co.uk/travel/article/20250220-hageslag-dutch-sandwich

No, I've never heard of them and probably wouldn't eat them on bread. Sprinkle them on cake and they might be good. But, I also don't eat Nutella, which is a chocolate hazelnut spread that a lot of people eat on bread here, too. *shrug*

A lot of chocolate hazelnut spread is eaten in this house, often on toast. But not with butter though, that just seems horrible. But in the interest of science I'm going to try a hagelslag sandwich now!

@DaddyEvil Well I tried it - it was OK. Basically it was quite nice but I could take it or leave it. I'll let the girls eat them; they are the big consumers of chocolate spread around here too.

It sounds like they might be good on a croissant, but as a casual observer they don’t sound good on a sandwich. I’ve never heard of them. It was nice of him to bring some back for the rest.

Never heard of it. But don't think I would want it on bread.

I've never heard of them. Some things sound really weird to those of other cultures. I can't imagine chocolate on bread.

Not seen them. We were in Amsterdam in January and visited supermarkets on a daily basis but I don’t remember seeing those.

There is also Hagelslag sold in Germany but it is called Chocolate Streusel. I seldom I eat it on my bread. I usually use it over a cake for decoration.
