The bees are waking up!

It’s definitely spring, for the past few days I’ve been seeing bumblebees out and about and even a butterfly or two. I had a surprise this morning when I went to get my wash-bag from the bathroom and found this big queen bumblebee resting on it! I don’t know whether she had flown in through the window yesterday or whether she had found a hidden place to hibernate all winter without us noticing. Anyway she looked as if she needed a bit of a pick-me-up so I carefully carried her outside and found these Mahonia flowers which I know bumblebees like. She stayed on the bag without moving as I carried her through the house but once she saw/smelt the flowers she seemed quite eager to investigate those. I hope she was able to refuel and get on with her day-to-day spring business! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.

It's really interesting watching bees and ants going about their business. There is a lot more to them than you might first think.

@Fleura They do indeed. Some of the loads those ants carry would do my back in quick time. Did you ever watch Miniscule when it was on? It might be an acquired taste but the clips are only about 10-15 minutes. They're on YouTube. I got quite addicted to them when they were showing here each evening before the news.

Thank you! My camera isn't very good at taking close-ups usually.

Those are most definitely signs of spring. It’s still too soon for those lovely signs in many parts of the US, but they will be coming soon.

Haven't seen any bees yet, but it is certainly becoming more lively out there!

We have a lot of spring flowers so I guess we are a destination! Primroses, hellebores, pulmonaria, heather and mahonia, all things bees like

The fields are full of daisies and primroses, I have seen a couple of bees resting on our window and the birds are building their nests. Spring is finally here.
