Everyday robots

It’s funny how the word ‘robot’ still seems somehow futuristic and like something from science fiction – and yet they are becoming more and more common and infiltrating everyday life, almost without us noticing. Of course industrial robots have been around for quite a long time by now, but most of us don’t see those on a regular basis. Robot vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers have become much more common – although I have to say that the people I know who had them now don’t seem to have them any more. This little cleaning robot I saw at the shopping centre at the weekend, carefully sweeping around people’s feet. There were a lot of people standing around watching a dance event and most of them didn’t seem to even notice it! Do you have robots in your everyday life? They really do seem to be everywhere. They deliver your food to your table when you eat out, they vacuum, mop and move packages. My husband remembers when they brought the robotic arm, which was a pouring device, into the factory that he used to work at. They poured foam in its liquid form into molds to make automobile seats, and that foam was hot and was filled with dangerous chemicals. They employed that robot back in the 1980's.

I have never had food delivered by a robot. Maybe I just haven't eaten out recently enough! They are certainly useful for dangerous and/or repetitive jobs. I know some are used to detect landmines.

@Fleura We have been served by a little robot, even placed our order at the table using an ipad. Waitressing is rather repetitive when you think about it.

I love seeing automated systems at work. The last one I saw was on a bus trip and a machine was wrapping chocolates. I found it really fascinating.

Some of the automated programs that we use are in a way "Robots". Or the AI system. I do see some Vloggers showing such cleaning robots they use in their homes. My concern is regarding their maintenance costs and are they have easy serviceability or repair facility?

@Fleura Could be too expensive and difficult to be maintained!

Yes I know. I don't know what happened to the ones that seem to have disappeared. I must ask whether they were jut too expensive to repair.

@Fleura I like them. They are not good for carpet. I keep hoping for that to improve. I have the lefont brand

I’m one of the ones who once had a robot vacuum. I found that my vacuum cleaner, or as you probably say, Hoover, did a deeper clean.

Our neighbours used to have a lawn mower but they don't seem to have it any more, I must ask what happened! Friends also showed off their robot vacuum cleaner but they don't mention it any more and I haven't seen it either.

@Fleura I considered a robot lawnmower between cuts from our lawnmower guys, but the reviews were awful.

We have a vacuum cleaner which also mops although her mopping leaves a bit to be desired.

Funny you refer to it as 'her'! Does 'she' have a name?

I can't imagine how anything like that would get around all the furniture, piles of books, musical instruments etc. in our house. And how does it get into the corners, which are the parts that need doing most? I have a manual carpet sweeper which is just great for flat open areas.

I mostly see robot vacuums, whether it be a Roomba or one suited for a big old Walmart.

Funny how you get used to things isn't it? As a student I had some friends who worked in the robotics department. When you went down into their basement lab there was a sign warning you of free-ranging robots. I could never see the point - how wrong was I!

I don't have any personal experience of such a thing. Our neighbours used to have a lawn mower but they don't seem to have it any more, I must ask what happened!

No, I don't. Nor have I seen them in shops here. Ours is too small a town to have them. And I'm happy we don't have them.
