What’s wrong with my water?

For the longest time I broke out in a rash when I showered. One day, after showering at my parent’s house, I realized despite our water coming from the same city source, I did not get a rash when I showered at my parents. I don’t break out in a rash when I shower anywhere other than my apartment complex. I started taking Benadryl, but that didn’t even help. Then I gave up Benadryl anyway because it’s bad for people with dementia in their family. Because the water also doesn’t taste good, I had the city test the water. They came back and said there was nothing bad in it that they tested for, that they could say was in it. They also cautioned they don’t test for a lot of things. So, what’s in it? Everyone in my complex agree it tastes bad, but I’ve only talked to a few people who said they get a rash from it. I’ve changed the shower head, I’ve tried water with no soap to experiment if it is a soap product. It has to be something in these old pipes. What could it be? Until I realized it was just my apartment complex I had started to think I had developed an allergy to water (you CAN be allergic to water on the skin, but not drinking it). I mean the rash was everywhere, and boy did I itch! It wasn’t a huge loss since I have cold water anyway (let’s not get into that again). The rash bothers me way more than cold water. Anyone have any guesses?

This is definitely strange. I have no idea what would cause this. Something is definitely going on for sure.

I would suspect the pipes but I don't really have any idea.

I wonder what could be in them.

@AmbiePam I would suspect old and corroded. Newer pipes are possibly made of better/cleaner/safer materials.

Does your apartment have a storage tank that stores the water before it's being distributed to the residents?

I feel for you. It’s really a bad situation to have no hot water and get rashes too. Do your neighbors have hot water?

I wonder what the pipes that you can't see are like and are they made of plastic, copper, lead???

Well, the one under my sink, whatever it is made of, was rotted. Last year my sink kept turning black, and the housing inspector called them on it. That pipe turned out to be rotted, and they had to replace it.

@AmbiePam That is scary. I am glad somebody stood up for common sense and your health. I would be worried about the pipe going from that pipe to the main line.

I’m sure it’s not your shower head. All I know is that nasty stuff can build up in those hidden pipes. So sorry about your horrible, itchy rash.

For the most part, I just shower at my dad’s when they aren’t home. They invited me to, but I try to stay out of their way as much as possible. They’ve been gone this week.

@AmbiePam I remember that they are gone. That’s another awesome thing about your dad.

I am sure old pipes and water can be hazardous to the skin.

That is really odd, hopefully you don't have old lead pipes.

Everyone needs to get together and complain and keep complaining until the problem is found

Sounds strange to me. To have drinking water, I do what my mom did her whole life I boil the water and then pour it into a jug to drink. Something I found online

If other residents in the apartment complex are experiencing the same, then l would conclude that the pipes in the building are definitely at fault..
