Holidaying while there’s a war on.

With international air travel being so disrupted right now it’s not a good time to be planning trips that involve flying anywhere. Although it’s just places like Dubai, Tel Aviv, Kuwait etc that are more or less at a stand still, it all has a knock on effect and there will be delays and disruption all over the show for a while. We had intended going to Athens at the end of March for our daughter’s birthday, but we’ve changed tack and will be driving up to Donegal to stay in a little cottage in the Gaeltacht for three nights. I love the Gaeltacht. I love listening into people’s conversations in cafes and bars when they speak Irish, and I get to at least order food and drink in Irish even if I don’t get any full-blown conversations. And there’s the quiet and the wide open, empty spaces and the wildness of the sea and the smell of turf fires in the air. It’ll rain of course and the wind will howl. The food in restaurants will be awful and very expensive, but anyway.

I think it is very wise that you're not flying anywhere. Who knows where all this will end? Our Irish son is suppoed to come out in July - Dublin, Berlin, Perth - so we're hoping there are no hiccups.

@judyev That’s a strange route, but it beats Dublin, Dubai, Perth which is the usual one.

@xFiacre I'm not sure why he's going that way. I guess it's to do with times. Actually I should have Singapore in between Berlin and Perth.

How dare they get in the way of your Athens vacation!

@ambiepam This happens to me a lot. I was all set for travelling through Iran in 1979 when the Shah was deposed and visas were not issued as a result. The next year I had my ticket booked to go to Afghanistan and the Soviet tanks rolled in while I was changing planes in Moscow so I was bumped onto a plane to India (though my bag went to Pakistan). I was all excited about going to Poland when General Jaruzelzki took power and wouldn’t let me in.

I don't even leave my apartment so I certainly would not travel anywhere,
