Dowry and women abuse in India

There has been a law against dowry acceptance since 1961 but still the bridegroom and his family haven't stopped asking money, jewelry and other assets like house, car or bike from the bride's family. Only then the marriage date is fixed.
My point is parents in India should invest in their daughters as much as their sons so that they can get well paid jobs or start profitable business and not think the daughters as burden and be in a hurry to get them married as soon as possible. This will give the woman to be financially independent and just reject the proposals from men that demand dowry.

Yes, the status of woman in their parents house has to improve. They are still treated as burden because of dowry.

@DaddyEvil That's right but a strange male sense of insecurity is trying to stop this empowerment of women.

The bridegroom family say that it hurts their dignity to marry without dowry. Actually it's just a trick to enmass wealth.

@aninditasen It certainly seems that way. I find it pathetic. The bridegroom needs to go out and find himself a career after college and graduate school. I had such a wonderful Indian doctor who became the head of cancer treatment at the prestigious Yale University hospitals. He not only had his MD, but a PhD as well. Plus, he was soooooooo handsome

@DianneN In India the higher the post the bigger the begging bowl. Doctors, engineers and officers in the Civil service and judiciary or top police officials demand dowry in crores.

Education had not changed the attitude of men towards women. They still think themselves to be superior to women.

@aninditasen Many people take a while to find their feet in a job.

@JudyEv That's the problem in India. Indian parents don't want to give time to their daughters to make a career. They want them to marry at a young age.

Not just education but parents should give their daughters the time to get a good job. It does take time in India to get a good job.
