A well-loved gift

When Big One was little, she was given a whole lot of cuddly toys. And these included a big pink bear from our neighbour (who had obviously won it at a funfair and didn’t know what to do with it!) as well as the big bear that belonged to me when I was a child.
So naturally Little One wanted a big bear of her own, but my partner wouldn’t get her one. He thought she already had enough toy animals cluttering the place up, and Big One’s two bears was already more than enough for one household, in his opinion. But she kept saying she wanted one and in the end I decided to get one for her, if she wanted it that much.
I saw this nice bear for sale, brought it home and kept it hidden for a few months until her birthday. Then I made a colourful ‘Happy Birthday’ banner and after she had gone to bed I sat it outside her bedroom door holding the banner so she would find it in the morning.
Well she was overjoyed! I think she was also especially pleased because this one was bigger and fluffier than either of Big One’s bears! The bear was christened ‘Tulip’ after her favourite flower, and since then she and Tulip have slept together every night. Tulip has even come camping with us, which as you can imagine pleased my partner no end
So I was glad I finally got her what she wanted, she has certainly appreciated this gift long after many others have been forgotten.
Did you have a favourite childhood toy?

What a sweet story about how your daughter came to have Tulip.
I have a similar story about my son's favorite stuffy.
Him and I used to go to garage and yard sales in the summer one year.
I would give him a toonie and he could buy something if he wished, but mostly he brought it back home to put into his piggy bank, except for 1 time.
He found a Pound Puppy that he adored. He had listened to me barter down a price, and he was able to get that Pound Puppy for less than half of what it was priced at.
He slept with it every night. He even took it to his dorm when he went away to university. Now, a young man and father, his little daughters play with it.
And its name.....he is Spot, or Spotty McGotty, the Sposter as we affectionately call him.
I do not know if he will hold on to the Sposter after his young girls fly the nest, he most likely will, since they are twins and Spot is just 1 sweet, very loved, often mended stuffy.

I am so glad that you got her one. It reminds me of mine. My daddy won one at a carnival in England when I was a baby. It burped when it was patted on the back and then tilted backward. I was so sad around two years ago when it basically disintegrated and fell apart. I turn 64 this year and it just didn’t hold up well.
I know that Little One will cherish hers for many years.

Yes a favourite toy
When I was 11 years old
My daddy did give me a skipping rope for Xmas to share with my little brother and little sister
It was wonderful
It was wrapped on brown paper and was just a rope.
Oh the hours of joy we had with that rope
I tied my brother and sister up with it and went off to the swimming pool,
And had a carefree afternoon.

If I had any stuffed animal toys as a child, I don't remember them.
I did buy a lot of them for Pretty, though. She still has some of them packed away in the garage. She slept with a giant dinosaur for years but finally figured out it was choking her while she slept. I kept telling her to set it in a chair while she slept and it couldn't choke her anymore. (She was sleeping ON the dinosaur!) So we gave it to the local thrift store. Now, she wants it back. We checked the thrift store but, of course, they sold it.

Sometimes kids just need to have that special something. Our son, aged about 5, paid 20c for a little rabbit at a church fete. On the way home he realised it was missing and we offered him 40c rather than have to drive back to get it. With a very sad face, he said he'd rather have the rabbit. We went back for it.
