NO, not the Jefferson Airplane song (that was 1967, so you’ll have to wait until next year for that one ). But you’ll remember this great tune from 1976. And, as I reiterate, this isn’t meant to make you feel old (because I do these countdowns every year to celebrate my birthday, and I don’t need any help feeling old ), but to show how classic these songs are. Here’s today’s song that’s celebrating 50 years of existence. Somebody to Love - Queen Oh, here’s a shock: Freddie Mercury wrote this about his life as a closeted gay man. Seriously, WHO was shocked that a guy fronting a band called Queen was gay?! Things were somewhat different back then. But at the end of the day, the music was the most important thing. And the music still is the most important thing. Here’s another thing to make you feel “old” (and sad): Freddie Mercury would be turning 80 this year. He was unquestionably one of the greatest frontmen in rock and roll history, and his music stands the test of time. And a joke for you: Queen named back-to-back albums after Marx Brothers movies (A Night At the Opera and A Day At the Races). Groucho Marx quipped that he was going to name his next movie “The Best of the Rolling Stones.’ Somebody to Love Written by Freddie Mercury Recorded by Queen From A Day At the Races, 1976 I got no feel, I got no rhythm:

So hard to believe he would soon be 80. Time really does fly! He sings of his struggle that was very real for him at the time. In the 70's even speaking of being gay was completely taboo. I have a friend from my childhood who was a closeted gay man for many years. As you said, things were very different back then, especially for gay people. A good song, thank you.

I remember reading about all the sick jokes made after the UpStairs Lounge fire in New Orleans, things that wouldn’t be said today (let alone published or spoken on the airwaves). Definitely a different time. (Funny, we lived on Main Street in Daytona Beach, and the quietest bar on the street was the gay bar.)

@FourWalls There are several gay bars in the downtown district. Funny, the regular bars are always having fights or brawls or whatever, but as you said, the gay bars are quiet.

I’m glad! Makes up for all the clunkers and ones you don’t know when a “good one” shows up.

Yes, it’s awful. Especially watching those videos he made at the end where he looked like a skeleton.

I strongly believe songs quite often reflect the times they were created/ written and sung.

The British glam rockers knew how to camp it up in the 70s.

The sad thing they will never make it like that again, the other sad thing is how hateful our country has become so no one can ever make it like that again. Prove me wrong America.

You’re right, we’re at a tipping point. Not a good one, either.
