My friends are getting married today. Not a big life-changing moment as they have been together a long time and got engaged 25 years ago, shortly after I got to know them. It’s just a quiet ceremony with them and two witnesses, of which I am one. There won’t be any fancy white dress or videographer or anything like that! Later we will go out for a dog walk around the area where they used to live, and in the evening a meal with our close families.
They don’t want a big fuss but I wanted to do a little something. So I have bought a few bottles of bubbly they can enjoy when they go away for a weekend in their motorhome.
Then I wanted a card, but not the traditional sort of course, so I didn’t really want a design with the usual things like rings or a wedding car (which they won’t have). I’m no artist either so I didn’t even think about trying to draw them and instead I have tried to make something with their two dogs – a black Labrador and a golden retriever.
It seemed like a good idea but that was before I started and realised how difficult it is to create features on a black dog! I thought I might be able to use a marker pen but that wasn’t very successful. If I had started earlier I could have embroidered something before sticking it on but I didn’t think of that until afterwards, so this is what they’re going to get. I hope they appreciate the thought behind it at least!

It seemed to be a low-key wedding, but your artful wedding card brightened up it ! Your friend will definitely cherish the wedding card.

@fleura Why can’t everyone have that sort of a wedding? When I was minister of a Church and I was asked to solemnise a marriage (yes, that’s the correct term!!) I did my best to steer couples away from spending £20,000 on the two hour event but it never worked. And £20,000 of course is on the conservative side. All it needs to cost is the price of a licence.

There was a steady stream of people coming in, a couple before us getting married with just two witnesses, and a couple coming in for a civil partnership after us. So some people must appreciate the simple approach, it's just that we don't notice those!
