Mother In Law Had a Major Meltdown Yesterday

Sorry I wasn't here much on myLot yesterday but we had two issues come up with mother in law. First, about 11 am the Memory Care Facility called us to say MIL reported her iPhone stolen, then they called back 10 minutes later to say she had hidden it under her underwear in her nightstand drawer. They said we needed to mitigate the situation of her accusations of theft by taking away her phone and SmartWatch, which are too expensive to have in a group home setting. We agreed to take away her phone not only because of that but also because she really no longer knows how to use it and it agitates her greatly. So we made a surprise visit to the Memory Care Facility and gave her pink landline phone and she gave up the watch and iPhone without any issues. Until 5 hours later. All hell broke loose. She can't figure out how to use the new landline phone (hence the problem) and used the phone at the nursing station to call my husband (her son) to demand her phone back. He said no and explained why. She said she was calling the police on him and she no longer had a son and he was to never call her or some see her again. I'll update you in another post as to what happened this morning.

Wow, you’d think she’d appreciate something simpler…however, we really don’t know what that disease is telling her mind about what’s going on.

She's accused the Memory Care Facility staff of stealing things 3 times now and every time it's something she "hid" and couldn't find later.

@looeyville This is so distressing, especially for hubs. However be assured that you’re acting in her best interests, and know too that the staff understand. Residents in my father’s care home were not allowed to have cash because staff were always accused of stealing so if there was no cash there could be no suspicion. But I discovered that my father had stashed a lot of £5 notes in the lining of the jacket he constantly wore.

I guess the silver lining is that she may forget that happened, but oh, it must be so stressful. I remember when my grandmother had dementia, she lived with us so my mother could take care of her. I was a teenager at the time, so it must have been a lot for Mom. Grandma accused me of stealing her things a couple of times. Weird stuff, like magazines and underwear - nothing valuable. I think it's very common for dementia sufferers to think someone stole their things when they can't find them, but I don't know why they do that. When I can't find something, my first thought is that I misplaced it, never that someone took it. Maybe they feel helpless.
