They made them tough in the olden days

I came across this postcard when I was sorting through some photos. It shows Marie Ottile (Tilly) Johannsen (nee Hoffmann) with her daughter, Elsa, on a camel (obviously) and en route to Hermannsburg, an aboriginal mission, in outback South Australia. The photograph was taken by her husband, Gerhardt Andreas Johannsen, in1909. A stonemason and builder, he spent several years in Hermannsburg then took up Deep Well Station. When he because ill in 1927, his son, Kurt, drove his father by truck over 50 miles of roadless country to Alice Springs. Kurt was 11 at the time. They made them tough in those days. Hermannsburg has a fascinating history but that’s a story for another time. I bought the postcard in the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame in Alice Springs.

Wow, it’s awesome that a 11-year-old can drive. Haha, I was quite old when I learned how to drive myself.

In those days on outback stations, the children were very mature and responsible. They wouldn't have survived otherwise.

11 years old and driving a truck 50 miles is awesome I think I didn't learn to drive a motorcycle until I was 14 and a car about the same age

I can't imagine a 'lady' voluntarily riding a camel. My dad said they stank and tended to spit and bite.

It was just about the only way to travel through those arid areas. There were very few cars, no roads and most of it was desert.

Wow, I’m glad they didn’t expect her to ride sidesaddle (the “lady-like way”) on a camel!! That’s a great photo, and yes, pretty indicative of how tough people were back then.

I think I've told you before the Flynn of the Inland used to travel by camel when he first started his missionary work. He was the founder of St John Ambulance and the Flying Doctor Service.

These people were so brave to go into the outback like they did. It's hard to imagine the life they faced.

I guess he did what he had to do. It was certainly a mighty effort.

I couldn't drive a car, at all, until I was 18!

I was 18 too. My brother had me driving the tractor just to get used to the steering and if you looked behind you could see a very wobbly track through the paddock.
