I watched Crime and Punishment. It was also made in 1935, but this is the French version. It is based on the book by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It has Pierre Blanchar, Harry Baur, Madeleine Ozeray, Lucienne Le Marchand, Marcelle Géniat, Alexandre Rignault, Aimé Clariond, and Claire Gérard in it. Big Warning: some violence. This movie does by book. In this movie, Rodion Raskolnikov does kill the pawn broker with the axe and her daughter. (In the book, he gets the idea from some people in a bar which sorta happens in this movie.) He does confess to Sonja and he almost confesses to the police of what he did, but then sees her in the hallway of the police station and then turn around and confesses. I did like this version because it went by the book, but I did like the American version too. I'm watching next another French version of Crime and Punishment, but it was made in 1956.

@JESSY3236 Such a compelling book. I first read it when I was about 17 in 1975 and have reread it regularly ever since.

I think films are much better when they stick to the book
