Strict discipline vs building emotional connections

When it comes to dealing with children, and training them, which would you consider as the best method between strict discipline or building emotional connections with them?
Personally i feel having a mixture of both should be the best. While you are strict in certain areas, there is need to build some emotional connections with your children.

A mixture of both is required. You can't be their friend until/unless they understand that friendship only goes so far and then discipline takes over.

mixture of both, of course but some set of rules cause, they won't be prepared for life, i feel.
