Mother-in-Law Had a Mid-Week Meltdown

That's two this week. But this one was totally justified, to a point. She went to dinner around 5:30 pm. When she got back to her room around 6:15 pm and opened her door there was a man laying on her bed. Fully clothed, including shoes and eyeglasses, asleep and snoring, laying on top of her comforter, not under the covers. Then she smelled a smell and turned around and there was a woman in her bathroom in the act of pooping. MIL tried to assault the couple and then spray them down with bathroom air freshener. It was a whole scene. The Memory Care facility cleaned her bathroom and also cleaned her comforter and linens and pillows because MIL freaked out about "the dirty SOB laying on my bed." Okay, so the man and woman were husband and wife residents there also who have severe dementia. They mistakenly went into her room thinking it was theirs. Apparently they do this frequently and had already done it once earlier in the day to somebody else's room. We talked to the Director of the Memory Care and she will issue a new protocol that the husband/wife couple must be escorted to their rooms after every meal and monitored in the hallways at all times. It took two hours to talk the mother-in-law down after this traumatic experience and she was at first angry, then got mean, then turned back to sad. There was screaming and crying. This really threw a curveball into getting MIL to adjust to living there. I always attach a pink photo to posts about the mother-in-law because pink is her favorite color.

@looeyville I’d have freaked out too! Old age is no laughing matter. A minister friend of mine with dementia was often found in the rooms of female residents standing right beside the bed in his pjs in the middle of the night just watching the sleeping ladies. Can you imagine wakening up to see that?! At least he always wore PJs.

I feel so sorry for her. The couple didn't mean any harm, but clearly it traumatized my mother in law. The facility is doing the best they can to remedy the situation, but it's going to take a while for MIL to get over this. Those things happen in these types of places and she's in the best place in the whole state.

@LooeyVille That couple’s family will be mightily embarrassed.

@xFiacre I think the facility had to restrain the couple in their beds last night to keep them from wandering.

That is just unacceptable. I’m not blaming the couple, don’t get me wrong. But once should have been enough to get the staff to act. I don’t blame your MIL one bit for her actions.

I wouldn't have been too happy either. I mean it was a mistake, but still I wouldn't have been too happy.

I'd have been upset, too, if I walked into my home and somebody I didn't know what on my bed or in my bathroom messing my things up. I agree, this time MIL was justified.

I feel bad for your MIL as that really would have upset me too. I hope the staff can make sure this couple are escorted when they leave their room and don't wind up wandering into someone elses room especially since it's happened before.
