Before I was born there were lots of great songs recorded. This is one of them. You are going to strongly disagree with me on this song.
Yes, it’s old and it’s — watch out — country. Linda? NO!!!!! Everyone else allergic to country music? NO!!!! Me? You bet!!!
I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby - Louvin Brothers
In 1956 the Louvin Brothers released what is regarded as one of the greatest albums in country music history: Tragic Songs of Life. It’s so good it’s listed in the predominantly rock-based book 1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It’s one album that lives up to its title (filled with murder [“Knoxville Girl’], accidental death [“My Brother’s Will”], and even your typical country-music Romeo-and-Juliet type double suicide [“Katie Dear”]), but dang it’s a great album.
This song isn’t on it.
It’s way too upbeat.
Now, if you’re used to the version that Alison Krauss did in the early 1990s, where it sounds more like it belongs on an album titled Tragic Songs of Life, this version might surprise you. I didn’t care for her version at all. She took all the fun out of this song, and this is a fun (and yes, silly) song.
This was the only #1 song in the Louvin Brothers’ career. None of their other singles as a duo topped the charts, and Charlie never hit #1 as a solo artist (Ira never got the chance, dying in a car wreck shortly after recording an album that would be released posthumously as The Unforgettable Ira Louvin).
They’re my favorite duo. Always have been, always will be.

@TheHorse — she doesn’t know Alison Krauss, either.

Listening again, I recognized the song, but heard a female voice singing it in my head. And at a slower pace. Alison Krauss? Sigh. Right again. Only after listening to her version did I read the rest of your post. Bad Horse! Her version was on my binge listening list years ago. I really like it. Their version is too fast for a song with such well-crafted lyrics. But their harmonies are great, as always.

This is the only version I ever knew, so Alison’s version hurt. It’s like “I’ve Been Everywhere,” all the people who think that’s a Johnny Cash song when he was the 14th or 15th person to cover it.

@TheHorse — oh, I like Hank Snow’s version. And I am a Johnny Cash fan. There are just songs that Johnny did where his version doesn’t appeal to me.

@FourWalls I don't care for "I've Been Everywhere." And I am not a Johnny Cash fan.

Yeah, but to be fair they grew up in rural Alabama, and what they’re wearing was probably “Sunday best” back then.

@FourWalls I'm sure they were very up-to-date but they look a bit baggy for the 2026s.

Definitely!
It was either this, “Cash on the Barrel Head,” or one of the slit-your-wrists songs on Tragic Songs.
