Hurrah! It’s stopped working!

Our village has a magazine which is produced every month, and a group of volunteers distribute it to all the households. I have a strip along the main road to deliver to (35 addresses), which takes about half an hour in total. It’s not a particularly arduous task and of course on a fine day is a good excuse for a stroll. The only downside, for me, is that the final house on my round has one of those supposedly ultrasonic motion-activated cat deterrent devices. I don’t know whether they actually deter cats, but they certainly deter me. I really can’t stand any kind of repetitive high-pitched noise (think of car alarms and that sort of thing). And my hearing is still pretty good. When I have seen the householders arriving or leaving home just as I’m nearby they don’t seem at all bothered by the noise, maybe they actually can’t hear anything. So every time I get to their house with the last copy of the magazine to deliver, I have to hurry to the door with the magazine in my teeth and my fingers in my ears. Of course though I have to use my hands briefly to get the magazine through the letter-box. And on my last visit I had a pleasant surprise – no high-pitched noise – yay! Presumably if the owners can’t hear it they also can’t tell if it isn’t working. And I’m certainly not going to tell them!
